If you reside in Ottawa, Ontario, you know that each of the four seasons have their own specific hardships. This particular 2008-2009 winter has really put our ability to adapt to our surroundings to the test. As unimaginable as it is, the workers of OC Transpo went on strike causing an abrupt and complete stop to public transportation. Opinions vary, but from my viewpoint that is not the worst of it. The true unbearable aspect of this crisis is the constant complaining being done everywhere in the region.
One of the more dominant groups of people who are whining on the regular about the unfortunate situation are the ones who are all talk. In other words, these people will spit anything out that comes to mind, convincing others that they will take action. After numerous threats and occasions with expressions of disgust, they are stuck at the starting line and still have not acted. My advice: either stop the complaints or follow through with your claims of improving the situation.
Next, the viral waves of uninformed individuals. Although these people do take action rather than simply sitting around, they are acting on false facts and twisted ideas. This is an example of the danger of rumours. A majority of people will say that wages and schedules are the problems between the workers, the union and the city, but there are so many other hidden issues that are censored by the media such as support staff as well as the circumstances of the offers being made and rejected. My advice: find a credible source and get informed before humiliating yourself.
Third, an agitating characteristic that can be paired with either of the two previously mentioned personality types: repetition. Everyone knows it is affecting every single living soul in Ottawa, everyone knows the traffic is terrible, everyone knows some of the offers that have been made by the city are outrageous. Nobody wants to hear it anymore. My advice: stop repeating yourself and talk about something that people don’t know about.

On the bright side, it is heart-warming to see people of all ages from all over Ottawa going out of their way to help others. The list is long but the fact that families, friends and co-workers have begun carpooling is a big deal. There is even a website (www.ottawaridematch.com) to help those who are still stuck staying at home.
In addition, I believe the obvious results of everyone adapting to the situation is one of the most intriguing factors to have risen with the recent extreme conditions that have come into play. Now that the unthinkable bus strike has become a reality, it proves that many things are possible with the help of others.
To sum up, people talking about the bus strike may not be the worst to come out of the situation but it is an added weight that is unnecessary. This strike is a wake up call that was bound to happen one way or another. In future, hopefully there will be more positive aspects emerging from this dilemma as opposed to negative ones.
